Supporting Children and Families in Thailand

The Salvation Army Thailand will launch a new Care Centre in Chiang Mai in mid-2026. The Centre will be a child-centred, family-focused hub providing early intervention and holistic support to strengthen families and reduce the risk of children entering institutional care.

With after-school care as its core service, the Centre will deliver preventive support to vulnerable children, parents, and communities—addressing needs early and helping families stay together.

Why it matters

Thailand has no less than 120,000 children in institutional care, with up to 90% having at least one living parent—often separated due to poverty and limited access to education and support. While institutional care may be necessary in emergencies, UNICEF reports its overuse in Thailand, with long-term negative effects on children’s emotional, cognitive, and mental development.

With more than half of Thailand’s estimated 700 private institutional care facilities unregistered, this further raises serious risks around care quality and child safeguarding. Early, community-based interventions—such as safe after-school care, educational and psychosocial support, and parent empowerment—can address the root causes of separation, strengthen families, and enable children to grow up safely within their own communities
